Neena Newberry worked in HR at Deloitte, leading performance management and career planning for 34,000 employees, before launching an executive coaching business. It was during her time at the firm that a former Deloitte partner gave her advice on dealing with a difficult situation.

“Even when you know someone in a higher position of power is saying things that are untrue about your performance, take the high road,” Newberry recalls him saying. “It might be the hardest thing you ever do, but ask them for advice. You will probably surprise them, and start the process of turning them into an ally.”
